Je vais + infinitif

To talk about what you are going to do, use aller (present) + an infinitive verb.

Quelle heure est-il ? — Telling time

Use these expressions to say the time and talk about opening hours.

  • Il est 8 heures. — It's 8 o'clock.
  • Il est 8 heures et quart. — 8:15
  • Il est 8 heures et demie. — 8:30
  • Il est 9 heures moins le quart. — 8:45
  • Il est midi. — It's noon.
  • Il est minuit. — It's midnight.

Lina : Oui, ça va. Écoute, il faut aller au pressing aujourd'hui ! Tu vas chercher ton costume ?
Yes, I'm fine. Listen, we need to go to the dry cleaner's today! Are you going to pick up your suit?
Nil : Mon costume ? Ah oui, j'ai oublié ! À quelle heure ferme le pressing ?
My suit? Oh right, I forgot! What time does the dry cleaner's close?
Lina : À 7 heures du soir. Attention, c'est tôt !
At 7 in the evening. Careful, it's early!
Nil : Quelle heure est-il maintenant ?
What time is it now?
Lina : Il est 5 heures et quart.
It's a quarter past five.
Nil : Oh la la… J'ai une réunion au bureau jusqu'à 6 heures et demie. Je vais passer au pressing tout de suite après.
Oh dear… I have a meeting at the office until half past six. I'll stop by the dry cleaner's right after.
Lina : Parfait. Et moi, je vais acheter du pain. La boulangerie ferme à 8 heures.
Perfect. And I'm going to buy some bread. The bakery closes at 8.
Nil : D'accord. Ce soir, on va manger ensemble à la maison ?
Okay. Tonight, are we going to eat together at home?
Lina : Oui ! Je vais préparer des pâtes. À ce soir, chéri !
Yes! I'm going to make pasta. See you tonight, darling!
Nil : À ce soir, ma chérie ! Bisous.

Point grammaire

Pour parler de tes projets, tu utilises « aller » + infinitif : « je vais faire, tu vas partir… »

What you'll learn: The futur proche ('going-to' future) is the easiest way to talk about what you're about to do. Just conjugate 'aller' + the infinitive verb: 'je vais manger', 'tu vas voir', 'on va partir'.
